Things to Know Before Dyeing Your Hair

Things to Know Before Dyeing Your Hair

The seasons are changing, and that means hairstyles are changing as well. As summer approaches, you might be tempted to dye your hair to cover up grays or add some flair. While going to the store and picking up a box of dye might be appealing, it is not as simple as you might think. We’ve compiled a list of tips to keep your hair dye from becoming a hair fail.

Ask for Advice

If you are preparing to color your hair or if you need to color your hair in a pinch, speak with your colorist to determine the color level they would recommend. Your colorist will have valuable information that you can use to guide you to the proper color for your needs.

Go for Semi-Permanent Dye When Coloring Gray Hair

If you are looking to add color to gray hair, it is best to choose a semi-permanent color instead of a permanent dye. Doing this will blend hair with minimal damage, especially since it needs to be treated more frequently.

Choose One Shade Lighter

When you are choosing a box color, make sure you pick a shade lighter or half a shade lighter than your natural hair color. This is a safe bet so you don’t end up with a color that doesn’t match your natural color.

Experiment with Root Touch-Up Products

If you don’t want to dye your hair at home but want to mask some of your grays until you can book an appointment at the salon, then use a temporary hair color spray to covers the gray hair.

Apply Your Color in Sections

Although applying color at home is not recommended, if you really need a quick fix, then be sure you part your hair in sections before applying color. This makes the application process more manageable and helps to distribute the color evenly.

Let Professionals Color Your Hair

In theory, you should be able to go pick up a box of dye, follow the instructions, and look like a supermodel with your newly colored hair. Unfortunately, dyeing your hair on your own can be tricky, and there is plenty of room for error. The best way to make sure your hair comes out the way you want it to is by letting professionals dye it for you.

Allow us to introduce to you a low maintenance coloring technique that has been a favorite of celebrities for the past few years. The effect is called Balayage- a French word that means to paint or to sweep. Instead of using traditional foils, stylists apply the color freehand, which allows for a customized, natural look. Balayage requires minimal upkeep because unlike traditional highlighting, it is not applied at the roots. It is swept across the hair so outgrowth looks natural, which is healthy for both your hair and your bank account! This technique is perfect for shoulder length or longer hair and looks great on dark or light hair. The look is especially popular this season and has been seen on runways and celebs including Jessica Beil, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, and Lauren Conrad. If you are looking to light up your features without committing to the upkeep, this is the technique for you.

Who is paying the price, us or the birds? Bird feathers and feather extensions have been all the rage in hair fashion for the past couple of seasons. You can get the cute feathers put into your hair in an array of colors and styles which last up to 3 months. If you are one who has tried the current trend or is interested in getting them put in, here are some little-known facts about the popular trend and the animals they are sourcing them from: • Roosters or birds are raised until about 4 years old or sometimes younger until their feathers reach maturity. Often, the birds are then gassed with carbon dioxide and put down an assembly line where their feathers are plucked out. The average lifespan for a rooster is typically 8-12 years. • Birds are being specifically bred, sometimes genetically altered to produce long luxurious feathers, then slaughtered or sometimes plucked which is extremely painful to the animal. • There are synthetic feathers out there, but be aware. Many of the fake looking feathers are in fact real. Sometimes packaging states the feather are “natural” or “real”, not always. • When researching, we found many websites had information about how the feathers were sourced. Some even had pictures and videos from the farms they were sourced from claiming to be “cruelty-free” but, because of the popularity of the trend how can we be sure? Weekly, thousands of birds are being killed or harmed for a fleeting fashion trend. As a lifestyle salon, we are taking a stance not to provide this service to our guests. Animal cruelty is something we feel very strongly against and is one of our founding principals. Because of our beliefs, we do not use animals for our product testing; instead, rely on humans and extensive lab testing for our product lines. Make the choice to stand with us and choose an alternative to feathers: colorful or funky colored hair extensions, hair tinsel, Swarovski Crystal hair extensions or cute flowers or barrettes for your hair make a fashionable statement, not a cruel one. Thank you for the support and standing up for the helpless animals.
