Prevent and Repair Heat-Damaged Hair

Prevent and Repair Heat-Damaged Hair

From blow drying and curling to flat ironing and waving, our hair endures a lot of heat styling daily. Over time, heat damage can lead to dry, dull, and brittle strands. If you color or chemically process your hair, this damage is compounded, since it’s coupled with the effects of the chemicals used. Here, we explore some go-to solutions for protecting strands from heat damage.

Air Dry Whenever Possible

Air drying might take longer, but it will save your hair from severe damage in the long run—even if you do it just once or twice a week. If you have naturally curly hair that you love to wear straight or super straight hair that you love to make wavy, allow your hair to air dry first and then apply the hot iron.

Always Apply a Thermal Protector

Before you apply heat to your hair, use a heat protectant, which creates a barrier between your open hair shaft and the heat. As a bonus, a lot of heat-protectant serums tend to detangle strands, as well, creating less friction and breakage when you comb through.

Invest in a Good Blow Dryer and Brush

This is one of the simplest ways to cut out some of the damage you may be causing your hair, says Chillino. “A better blow dryer with a proper nozzle will eliminate having to work as hard and long on your hair because it will take less time and therefore apply less heat. Using a boar bristle brush since it doesn’t heat up the way a ceramic or metal brush does. Instead, it pulls the natural oils through the hair without drying the hair out.

Use Hair Masks Regularly

If you do heat-style often, one of the best ways you can expedite your hair’s recovery is to do a hair mask at least once a week. Masks can condition and protect hair from heat and environmental aggressors.

Get Regular Trims

Cutting your hair might not seem like it could help prevent heat damage, but the reality is the healthier your strands, the less damage heat will cause. You can prevent breaking or splitting hair by trimming your hair even just once every couple of months, although stylists recommend doing so every 8–12 weeks.

Allow us to introduce to you a low maintenance coloring technique that has been a favorite of celebrities for the past few years. The effect is called Balayage- a French word that means to paint or to sweep. Instead of using traditional foils, stylists apply the color freehand, which allows for a customized, natural look. Balayage requires minimal upkeep because unlike traditional highlighting, it is not applied at the roots. It is swept across the hair so outgrowth looks natural, which is healthy for both your hair and your bank account! This technique is perfect for shoulder length or longer hair and looks great on dark or light hair. The look is especially popular this season and has been seen on runways and celebs including Jessica Beil, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, and Lauren Conrad. If you are looking to light up your features without committing to the upkeep, this is the technique for you.

Who is paying the price, us or the birds? Bird feathers and feather extensions have been all the rage in hair fashion for the past couple of seasons. You can get the cute feathers put into your hair in an array of colors and styles which last up to 3 months. If you are one who has tried the current trend or is interested in getting them put in, here are some little-known facts about the popular trend and the animals they are sourcing them from: • Roosters or birds are raised until about 4 years old or sometimes younger until their feathers reach maturity. Often, the birds are then gassed with carbon dioxide and put down an assembly line where their feathers are plucked out. The average lifespan for a rooster is typically 8-12 years. • Birds are being specifically bred, sometimes genetically altered to produce long luxurious feathers, then slaughtered or sometimes plucked which is extremely painful to the animal. • There are synthetic feathers out there, but be aware. Many of the fake looking feathers are in fact real. Sometimes packaging states the feather are “natural” or “real”, not always. • When researching, we found many websites had information about how the feathers were sourced. Some even had pictures and videos from the farms they were sourced from claiming to be “cruelty-free” but, because of the popularity of the trend how can we be sure? Weekly, thousands of birds are being killed or harmed for a fleeting fashion trend. As a lifestyle salon, we are taking a stance not to provide this service to our guests. Animal cruelty is something we feel very strongly against and is one of our founding principals. Because of our beliefs, we do not use animals for our product testing; instead, rely on humans and extensive lab testing for our product lines. Make the choice to stand with us and choose an alternative to feathers: colorful or funky colored hair extensions, hair tinsel, Swarovski Crystal hair extensions or cute flowers or barrettes for your hair make a fashionable statement, not a cruel one. Thank you for the support and standing up for the helpless animals.
